If your fanfiction is set in Japan, please remember these two points:

1. High school.
Japanese high school is different from other high schools, especially American ones. The main difference being that in Japan, the teachers move from classroom to classroom and the students stay put. Of course, students might still have to move for special classes like PE and Art, but I digress. What this means is that your character will study with the same group of students all day (although PE can be split between genders). There is no, "Oh, I have you for Physics and English, but we won't be together for Algebra." If the character has one class with another student, they will have them all together. If they have a different home room from another character, they will only be able to see each other during breaks.

2. Valentine's day.
In Japan, Valentine's Day is "backwards." Meaning, the girls give guys chocolates. They can either be honmei or giri chocolate; one type of chocolate is obligatory, and a girl would give this to any non-romantic male that she's close to, e.g. a father, brother, or friend. The other is DEFINITELY romantic, and would only be given to the guy she likes. Then, a month later, on White Day, the guys would give a return gift to all the girls he got chocolates from. (Yeah, the guys can get chocolates from multiple girls without being seen as a choco-whore.) The USA uses Valentine's day as a way to wring grand romantic gestures from guys without the girls ever really having to reciprocate.

Remembering these facts will help your fanfiction feel more believable in its setting.

*Correct me on anything if I'm wrong. I only know my stuff from reading manga myself. DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT, I'M CREDIBLE!
